OK now."

"Thanks very much to Bill Brown, although in my case i found it necessary to use DEVICE=ATAPIMGR.SYS /P 170,15 DEVICE=SR_ASPI.SYS /D MSCD000 /Q instead of DEVICE=C \ATAPIMGR.SYS /P 170,15 DEVICE=C \SR_ASPI.SYS /D MSCD000 /Q regards"

"This driver allowed me to load in Windows from the CD-ROM. I did it on 2 separate drives. One drive had MSCDEX already on it, but the other drive required me to copy MSCDEX from the Windows boot diskette."

"The driver worked for my CR-572 on MSDOS 6.22 I ran 58x_dos.exe on a floppy to extract the files to the floppy. I then typed install at the A > prompt, then chose option 2,Express installation. The screen showed that the old autoexec.bat and config.sys had were renamed. When asked if these were setup, enter yes. Reboot. I could then read CDs, but give a few seconds after putting in a new CD. The FCC-ID was IUO9TB027CRB."

"I have a Packard Bell Legend 401cd. After many hours of agravation I came to Driverguide. Thank God for this site. Here's what I did. Formatted the C drive / installed DOS 6.22 / Copied the 58x_dos.exe to the root of C \ and extracted it and then typed "install" at the C prompt. Rebooted and then I was able to see the CDROM drive as D \. Then Installed Windows 98 from the CD. Thank you to you all for posting your tips and thanks to the good people at Driver Guide."

"Thanks to this site and all who contributed drivers and comments to help me access my cd-rom drive after I formatted my hard drive. For those still having difficulty I recommend 1. Rethink and recheck your hard wire cable connections to be sure they are correct and secure. 2. Go to support.microsoft.com and obtain article Q135174. Also go to Univ of Indiana's web page kb.indiana.edu/data/ahbz.html?cust=11528 and study "How do I make a startup disk that can access my cd-rom drive?" These should provide the instructions or background that some of us lack when coming to the driverguide web site seeking a solution to our problem."

"Looks like I have the same problem as many before me. Earlier I downloaded the win 95/98 version and realized I needed the dos version since I had reformatted the hard disk and needed the cdrom drive to install win95/98 in the first place! Hope it works this time."

"Using a strange 2nd-hand P-II pc, booting from W98 pseudo-DOS diskette, I needed the CDROM (which is secondary slave) in order to install Win on the formatted HD. I tried following Bill Brown's very clear instructions, but no go... After rereading the enclosed README.TXT file, I decided to leave out the *optional* options and just used these 2 lines in CONFIG.SYS DEVICEHIGH=ATAPIMGR.SYS DEVICEHIGH=SR_ASPI.SYS /D MSCD000 Worked the first time! Thank you all for the drivers and lots of good advice!"

"FORMAT FORMAT FORMAT I work for a Nursing School - Someone donated this computer (Packard Bell / Legend 406cd) - What ever I did I could not get it to recognize the CD-Rom - Finally I gave up 5 hours later and with the CPU held high above my head (I counted to 10) / I formated c / Loaded DOS 6.2 / installed this driver / I rebooted and it DID NOT work / I rebooted a second time and it WORKED!!! You guys are GODS - Thank you sooo much - Keep the faith everyone! By the way this is what I think about Packard Bell tech support => @#$@#$^@#$^%!!!! They must be hiring people with NO EXPERIENCE at all - The guy I talked to told me that he could sell me "CD-ROM DISK" with the appropriate drivers on it to get the computer to recognize the CD-ROM - WHAT an IDIOT!!!!"

"I have been going into circles and still cannot figure out how to access my cd rom after installing this driver and so i am stuck, as i cannot begin installation of windows and anything else on my computer. Apart from executing install in DOS mode (that is with the uncompressed 58xdos.exe file) and adding appropriate lines in config.sys and autoexec.bat, I am still lost. The message I get is that the CD Rom drivers are installed, and the system recognizes the drive correctly also, but does not give access to CD Rom. My guess is, I am missing something by which to name the drive as D,E,F etc. I hope somebody will be kind enough to write about that process too. Still I appreciate the work done by so many to make the driver world so accessible , so easily. Thanx to everyone who has contributed."

"This thing has been driving me up the wall. I have an old CR-581-M (Quad Speed Creative label) that I am trying to use with my Athlon board and onboard controller and it just refuses to recognize it. The ATAPIMGR seems to halfway see it there but then it comes up with a cryptic Device name is fail ! blah blah blah and it's downhill from there. I have tried all the suggestions in this list already. Someone please help me with this, it is maddening."

"I found the following lines in the boot up files mandatory for my CR-581B cdrom drive to work. If you format the C hard drive, use the following command string to transfer your O/S files after formating is done (i.e. COMMAND.COM, IO.SYS, ect). FORMAT C /S Next, copy MSCDEX.EXE, ATAPIMGR.SYS, and SR_ASPI.SYS to the C \ root directory. Add these lines to your boot files on the C \ drive as well. AUTOEXEC.BAT (you add) C \MSCDEX.EXE /D MSCD000 CONFIGY.SYS (you add) DEVICE=C \ATAPIMGR.SYS /P 170,15 DEVICE=C \SR_ASPI.SYS /D MSCD000 /Q Port 170 and Interrupt 15 work if the CD-ROM is on the PRIMARY IDE controller (it would be the SLAVE). Use Interrupt 14 if using the CD-ROM on the SECONDARY IDE controller and your hard drive alone on the PRIMARY DEVICE=C \ATAPIMGR.SYS /P 170,14 Drop an email if you have any questions, I will be glad to assist. "This driver took some work before it would recognize the CD-Rom. I had to make changes in both the autoexec.bat and config.sys files. Of course, you need to copy the two drivers mentioned below to your boot-up disk. AUTOEXEC.BAT LH A \MSCDEX.EXE /D mscd000 CONFIG.SYS DEVICE=A \ATAPIMGR.SYS /T 0 /F IOS.INIDEVICE=A \SR_ASPI.SYS /D MSCD000 /Q"

"I downloaded this driver, and once I had run the program, then the install program, it worked perfectly. It has to rewrite your autoexec.bat a little, so let it do that. If it asks if it has to write to mycdex.exe, say yes. If you are going to use these drivers for your boot disk, add the lines device=atapimgr.sys device=sr_aspi.sys to your config.sys. Also add those files to your start up disk. That should do the trick!"

"Had some major probs with this one and the other posts - had no luck whatsoever running it as a Floppy Boot or off C Just like with Mark Bowen it had the MSCD000 switch & could not load the drive. I even used different MSCDEX exe's 'cause I thougth the 1st was corrupt. Changed it to MSCD001 for the Floppy Boot - no luck. I must have sys'ed the system 20 odd times...finally got it by loading win95 off C and when the "Starting Windows 95..." prompt came up I inserted the floppy with the 6.22 boot files...don't ask me how this worked...I'm still lost -( Any sugeestions?"
