"I don't know how often people check this board, but here goes. Just wondering if anyone out there has been able to get a Cisco 605 to work with Windows2k?? I've given up hope of it working with XP, but still have my fingers crossed for 2k. I was able to use the 605 with ME, but ME is such a piece of crap that I went back to 98SE. But now I got a copy of 2k, and would like to use it, but can't live without my internet. And I don't feel like waiting the 2-4 weeks Qwest/MSN said it would take for me to get a 2100(after doing the same cancel then resign up thing). I've always been pretty happy with my little 605 and would hate to switch. I have though about just tanking the whole thing and going with Earthlink, but I'm trying to hold out. I've searched far and wide for any info on a 605 driver for win2k, but haven't had anyluck. thanks richrock"

"In reply to HHH, good luck! I also upgraded to XP & Qwest promised me they would send me an intel 2100. I never got it so I called customer service back & they said they cannot send me one because my 605 is out of warranty, nor could they sell me a 2100. I was told the only way I could get a new modem was to cancel my account with MSN & sign up as a new customer. That would mean giving up my current email address & waiting 2-3 weeks while Qwest switch my line from CAP to DMT cause MSN doesn't want to support the older CAP technology. I think it stinks that Qwest can't provide a better solution since I have been a DSL subscriber for so long."

"I have the cisco 605 internal modem. I just built a new windows XP machine and found out the hard way that there are no 605 drivers for XP, nor will there ever be any. Since it does not even support windows 2000, there is no way to use this modem on a XP system. Kind of stinks because the 605 is one of the best made. So now Qwest is sending me an intel 2100. Looking at the Qwest web site, it seems the only way to download the XP drivers is by dowloading the drivers first and then upgrading to XP, which I can't do since I got the full version of XP and only have an OEM compaq version of 98 which cannot be installed on another machine. I was wondering if, when I get the intel 2100, if I can simply download the XP driver onto a floppy using a machine I can access the net with (it seems like the zip file for the XP driver is small enough to fit on a floppy). Then if I can unpack the zip file on the floppy onto my new machine? Does XP even have a program to unzip a file? Because if it dpoes not, I have no way of logging on online with my new machine to even get an unzip program. I noticed Qwest will ship out the XP drivers on CD ROM for free and was hoping this new CD will ship with my 2100, would save me a big headache. Anyone know if this will be the case?"

"The win2000 driver available @ qwest.com for the 2100 works with XP. However, there is one small catch that i've found and would be interested to find out if others are having the same problem. CPU usage before the connection is trained = 5-10% After the connection is trained = 100% (!!!!!!) I've been on the phone twice with Qwest about an XP driver for the 2100, they tell me the ball is more or less in Intels court at this point. So....it could be awhile."

"Setting up the Intel Pro 2100 on my Win2kP machine was like pulling teeth but I made it with the help of these comments, Thanx. Some people were asking how to "tweak" your connection speed. I have had varying luck reducing the transmit power of the modem in the modem driver properties. Drop the transmit power until you can't connect and then bump it up a notch or two to keep it reliable."

"I've been using this driver with a copy of 2000 pro running 1 CPU. I just set up another copy on it's own HD using Dualies (celeron 466's @ 525) This is now a Quad boot system with each OS on it's own drive (98se) (2000 pro 1 CPU) (2000 Pro 2 CPU's) The driver works GREAT on the single cpu setup (2000) but on the dual setup it locks up during dialing. I've noticed that for some reason windows didn't copy all the files during setup (ie connect to the internet icon on my desktop is non functional in the duallie setup) Is anyone else having trouble with a dual cpu setup (is it a driver problem?) or is this problem related to all the files not being copied during setup?"

"No, it is not possible to "spoof" the hardware for a faster connection. In some areas there is additional bandwidth available above your subscription speed. It depends on your line quality. A friend of mine pays for 256K but will get up to 511K download."

"Glad that the driver has worked out for some people. I just wanted to post a note to tell you to ignore Maricio's post. Its only being used as a scare tactic. In fact this driver was posted from a location that works for USWest and was tracked back to me and ended in me losing my job(My fault, shouldn't have used my real name. You live and you learn.) But don't worry, you can't keep a good man down. FIGHT THE MAN!!! ) Anyway's, enjoy the driver."
Jason  10 Jul 2000

"By the way, Maricio, Intel's dsl modems, nor their NIC cards have write-able proms on them. Also, there is no way that using this "beta" driver will PHYSICALLY damage my modem. If the modem fails, it will be due to a HARDWARE failure."

"Sorry about the earlier post. If anyone runs into trouble with the install, breaking on the dslcoinst.dll file, then check that your system didn't "drop" the last letter. Rename the file dslcoinS.dll to dslcoinsT.dll and all will be fine. I am currently on win2k and 2100"

"I'm just curious. I've downloaded the link above, and I'm only getting a partial driver. What have the rest of you done in W2K to make this work? I've looked at the .inf file, and it looks like it should work...but? Where did you extract the files? Winnt\inf? Thanks"
Larry  7 Jul 2000

"I just got off the phone with US West support (7/7/00) and the official word is there will be no driver until at least August. I found your driver while I was waiting on hold for US West(1 1/2 hours!) and it works great! Already downloaded all the Windows 2000 updates at about 350kbps without a flaw. You saved me from reverting back to Windows 98 (again!) Thanks!!"
Conrad  7 Jul 2000

"OK, works fine in my computer running dual boot win98 and win2k, different than the win98 version, which has some tweaks you can use to compensate for line quality. PS. It is impossible for the modem to record the driver version, that's just silly."
Robert Murphy  2 Jul 2000

"Jason, you da man!!! The driver works great for me! My 2100 is now working smoothly (flawlessly thus far) in Win2k. No system freezes, nor, any other problems with it. I've heard somewhere that they don't actually plan on releasing the drivers to the public until the end of the year, so this is great for the interim."
Muz  29 Jun 2000

"These are actually the Alpha drivers. There are no Beta drivers as of yet. They will be posted on www.megaspeed.com under "Whats new" when they are released. I would heed the warning, USE AT OWN RISK!"
FixitDave  28 Jun 2000

"This driver WILL NOT FUNCTION, there were parts left out deliberately. This is not even a Beta set, the Beta drivers will not be released until mid July and then only to private concerns utilizing the same method protection, meaning it will come as three seperate parts. I strongly urge you all not to use these drivers as the Intel 2100 records the version number of the current driver being used, If your modem fails you will need to send it in for testing before they will replace it, if they find out your were using the test drivers for 2K they WILL NOT REPLACE your modem for free, forcing you to buy one if you wish to continue using USWest DSL."
Maricio  28 Jun 2000

"The driver works fine with a Cisco 605 for access to the internet, BUT if you try to close the driver down (rebooting, manually, etc.) it brings up a blue screen of death. Hopefully someone can figure out a work-around."
