"Sorry, missed an important point. Under Picassa import the preview function crashes every time. The actual scans are really fast though, so I am just skipping the preview. The warm-up phase also seems to let you decide how long is enough - I don't know how long it would wait if left alone. Manually override the warmup and skip the preview and all is good."

"This was hard to get going because I kept trying to use the XP Scanner & Camera Wizard. It would not recognize the scanner. It works like a charm using the image capture part of Picassa 2. Probably will work with other generic scanner s/w too. Much faster scans than my HP Scanjet 2000."

For those of use running XP, you may wish to follow the instructions provided by John Heggie http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?action=summary&driverid=119750&recheck=1

Assuming a default install of IBM software find "EZ Station" by clicking on "START" then go to "PROGRAMS" and then "IBM Scanner" and then "EZ Station" Now right click on "EZ Station" and select "Properties" then select "Compatibility" tab under "compatibilty mode" change to windows 98. The scanner will then work perfectly with XP.
