"I had tried the Win98 driver for the RTL8129 adapter

from the Install-CD but it didn't work....but after downloading this RTL8139 driver and installing it, so far it seems to be working well across the network with both the IExplorer v5.0 and the latest version of Firefox...to connect to the Internet and down

"Windows 98se insists driver is incorrect (it claims this NIC is an "8120 series"), but force-install it anyway--this IS the correct driver for this card. You may have to reboot and re-run installer two or three times (do NOT use Safe Mode). The 8120 series driver will NOT work."
