Even if the PC doesn't recognize the hardware, the card can be mounted from the start. Just run the exe file, and the essential files will extract into the present dir. Choose not to automatically search for plug/play device, but "manual". Then choose "have disk" and browse to the dir containing the previously extracted files. When prompted to restart and install the sound card, restart Windows and let the computer finish the install (you will notice some HDD reading), now restart once again, and you should see the volume control again the speed bar on the lower right on the screen. Test that you have sound by going into control panel/sound and mark a windows sound and play it.
