"Once the file was unzipped, upon clicking on setup.exe a message popped up that setup.ini file was missing from the group of files.

Thus this was a useless download--could not install a much needed driver on this old system"

"Found this driver set can be utilized to install the HP Photosmart M540 on Windows 98. HP no longer supports that OS, and their software (with the camera) will not install on Win 98, hence couldn't transfer pics from camera to PC. Set camera to "disk drive" in setup, then connect camera to USB, and use "Add new hardware"; let OS find camera, do auto search for driver which Windows will not find, then select "browse" and direct to folder with these unzipped files. System will select a USB driver, and install creating a virtual "E drive" on PC. Easy as pie then, to get images from camera to PC. Also, my system only has 68 mb ram. HP requirements are for 256 mb. So, that does not seem to be a factor either. Don't know, but suspect this would might also work for other Photosmart models which also come from the factory and are no longer have Win 98 support. Don't know why it works, or if it will work for others, but it sure worked great for me !!
