"in this senario, ether it works or it doesn't. you need a good understanding of dos, but if you don't understand dos, why are you using it? you also need to have mscdex.exe . I usualy install both files to C:\CDROM where C: is your boot drive.

Anyway, it worked and it hasn't stopped working."

"People that have problems loading the oakcdrom drivers.. Remember, if you put it in a directory, you must state it. eg| device=c \(put the directory you placed oakcdrom.sys in here)\oakcdrom.sys /d(put colon here)MSCD001 that should go in your config.sys file ok, the autoexec.bat file if your mscdex file isnt in the main c(colon)\ directory, then you NEED to state it.. (dont type anything following the ' or the ') eg| cd\ 'used to make sure you are at c \ cd\(place directory mscdex is in here) 'then mscdex.exe /D(colon)MSCD001 then save your autoexec.bat it will work perfectly basicly what we are doing here is creating a dos system device, then telling the oakcdrom driver to set device as MSCD001. We are then using mscdex to call upon MSD001 for drivers, then loading those into memory and setting that device as a system root (eg| d \,e \,ect..) Well that's it.. I hope it solves some of your problems!"

"the problem is this mscd001 tells mscdex (Microsoft Compact Disk EXtensions) where the code to load teh cdrom drive is, so if mscdex or the friver are setup wrong it won't work. What you need is a colon after the /d, ex DEVICEHIGH=c \cdrom\oakcdrom.sys /d mscd0001 and c \dos\mscdex.exe /d mscd0001 hope this helps, if not IM me (kfazzone01)"

"Driver name is "CD-R01", not "MSCD001", that's why you can't get it to work. Change driver reference and all will be OK. Don't forget this is _only_ for DOS access to CDROM. Functioning in Windows may be bizarre for example you can read files but not execute .EXE files. If you use Windows, turn off reference in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, then use Add Hardware to find the CD drive."
AJBlank  16 Aug 1999

"Tristan setup says that the device driver 'oakcdrom.sys" and the DOS file "mscdex.exe" are in the root directory which generally is not true. WINDOWS 95/98 stores DOS files normally in "C \WINDOWS" or "C \WINDOWS\COMMAND" and I generally keep all hardware device drivers in subdirectories under "C \HARDWARE". Make sure you include the path when designating the file. Also the "/D mscd001" may be intrepreted by DOS as two separate commands rather than one command, suggest "/D mscd001" so DOS understands that this is one command, i.e., that the device '/D' is using the name 'mscd001'. For my setup, the CONFIG.SYS file has on one line the following c \hardware\cdrom\oakcdrom.sys /D mscd001 For normal WINDOWS 95/98 installation, the AUTOEXEC.BAT file has on one line the following c \windows\command\mscdex.exe /D mscd001 WINDOWS 95 did not show the CD-ROM device driver as functional under the 'control panel system cdrom' even though the CD-ROM worked. In upgrading to 98, the CD-ROM also worked but did not check the control panel."

"I did not get it to work either. PC is Dell 100MHz Pentium. Initial error reported "wrong usage" (or syntax) in AUTOEXEC - seems to need /D mscdoo1 /L D. This got rid of error. Exactly same problem still resulted as reported by Miguel Nevarez on Tue July 27, 1999. "No drives found" ... "Device Driver not found 'MSCD001' ... etc. Can anyone suggest how to get around this? CD-Rom unit is NEC CDR-510."
