"PCTel modems are winmodems. The install program (setup.exe) doesn't work, so you have to rely on Windows being able to detect the modem. If the modem was previously installed and there's an irq conflict, you can't resolve it unless you know which irq the modem was previously using. You then have to change the other device's irq. The modem can't be reconfigured to another irq or com port until it's actually found by Windows. Had that problem moving the modem to another PC. The other device's irq couldn't be changed, so I replaced it with a hardware modem. Other than that, it works fine. I wouldn't buy another 'soft' modem of any brand, though."

"ok heres what i did. down load this file and copy it to your c /windows/system32/drivers folder. There will be another file with the same name ac97via.sys just rename it to oldac97via.sys and put this one in to replace it... then go to device manager... right click my computer or system under control panel. uninstall the ac97 sound controller under sound and gaming options in the device manager. then at the top click action and tell it to scan for hardware changes... it should reinstall it with this as the new audio and it ..hopefully .. should sound like new again. =)"
