Modem Frequently Asked Questions

By Jerry K, DriverGuide.com Technician

These are instructions for posting a driver request on driverguide.com.

Folks, if you post a request for a modem driver and use any of the descriptions listed further down this list, your request will most like go un-answered.  This is because these are terms & descriptions that are general and can apply to many different manufacturers.  Modems must be described in absolute detail in order to get the correct driver.  You description should include as much of the following data as possible:

1:  Manufacturer:  Who made it (and please don't say Conexant/Rockwell...they don't make modems, neither
does PC Tel... these companies only make chipsets and sell them to manufacturer's who do make modems.

2:  Model #:   Now look for that... it should be on the modem somewhere and a litte looking may reveal it.
Some modems just simply don't have a model number...but most do.

3:  FCC ID # (not FCC REGISTRATION #) Some modems have both and are easily confused.  Use this sites FCC
ID search feature to determine the manufacturer from the fcc database.

4:  Chipset Numbers:  Look at those large black square chips on the modem.  Write down those numbers you
see on the tops of each chips and post those numbers in your request.  Some modems only have one,
other modems can have 2 or more.  Just post all of them to be certain we know what chipset your modem
    has.
5:  Please include a brief description of your modem, ie:  internal, external, speed (if known), if internal
please tell us if it fits a PCI slot or an ISA slot in your computer or if it is mounted on a seperate
card up and away from your motherboard connected via a ribbon cable.

NOTE:  If your unsure of what are model #'s and what are other numbers, just write down every number you
can find on the modem.... you can never post too many numbers and we can decode what most of those numbers
are.
